INTEGRITY
- Janice has never voted herself a pay raise
Janice vehemently opposed the 22% pay hike Council gave itself in 1998 and, even though her Council salary was her sole source of employment income then, refused to accept the extra money, permanently giving up thousands of dollars.
- Janice has a proud track record of working for greater openness and transparency
Janice continued to push, this past term, for greater openness, transparency and accountability at City Hall. She obtained Council support for her motion that candidates’ election financial returns be posted on the City's website, and followed up repeatedly with staff to ensure that this was done. Janice believes that making campaign finances more transparent is important to democracy.
Policies to permit tall, dense buildings in and near residential neighbourhoods throughout the city are proposed as part of the current Official Plan update. Janice insisted that nearby property owners should be notified by mail about major changes planned for their neighbourhoods. She did not want such changes approved without fair warning and a chance for affected residents to comment.
These are just twp examples of Janice’s constant vigilance on the behalf of the citizens of Niagara Falls. She is a strong backer of greater openness and transparency.
- Janice has been championing the development of a Code of Ethics for City Hall
Early this term, she obtained unanimous support for her motion that a Code of Ethics be developed for Council members and senior staff (whom are not covered under the Employee Rules and Regulations because it is they to whom violations must be reported). Based on codes already implemented in other Ontario municipalities, this yet to be implemented Code would prevent elected officials and senior staff from receiving gifts, perks or gratuities from monied interests.
Janice's Approach to Politics is:
“I take my guidance from The Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I have always striven to be on the side of fairness and justice.
I have always kept very firmly in mind that it was the PEOPLE of Niagara Falls who elected me, and it is THEIR interests that I am there to represent.
I have always taken what I believe to be the right way, rather than the easy way. The valued feedback I’ve received from the community has encouraged me to stand firmly on the strength of my convictions.
I have no higher political ambitions. To me, this is a job. I do my job - of representing the people of Niagara Falls and assisting citizens wherever called upon - to the best of my ability. I am grateful that the residents of this City have, four times, placed their confidence in me and elected me to do so.”
