ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS

Proceeding with "developing" the non-threatened green space along the Hydro canal implied ignoring windows of opportunity to protect other green spaces which are actually under threat.  Extending the Millennium Trail along the canal corridor would stress the flora and fauna resident there.  It would also detract from our ability to secure other green spaces.

If the focus (monetary and otherwise) was on extending the Millennium Trail, it would not be on preserving other corridors such as the “Downtown Trail” (currently used partially for parking)  or the former railway corridor along Palmer Avenue, on which the Downtown BIA is advocating a trail connection be built but also for which housing has been proposed.

I believe that anyone who truly wants to see our City’s green and open spaces preserved for the public to enjoy should focus on securing those that are actually threatened and developing a trail system there, rather than on a corridor which is under no threat at all.  Trail-building is more pressing where the planned routes are in danger of being lost if we don't build trails on them in the near future.
